Our Moringa plantations
We work in Mozambique
Our activities take place at the Casa do Gaiato de Maputo, in the southern area of Mozambique, about 80 kilometres from the country’s capital. The Casa do Gaiato de Maputo is an institution dedicated to the care of orphaned children in the area, providing them with education, housing, and, above all, social and work integration. The agricultural potential of the Casa’s land is immense, and for now, we have an agreement to exploit 50 hectares. We have already planted 50,000 trees.
Most of Mozambique experiences a tropical savannah climate with a rainy season from November to March. Moringa, also known as the “tree of life,” is a species native to India that has adapted very well to the climate of Mozambique. For years, its leaves have served as a nutritional supplement to combat child malnutrition.
Environmentally friendly facilities
Our facilities feature a drip irrigation system, a moringa oil processing plant from the seeds, and a leaf drying facility. In all our processes, we aim to follow natural and ecological procedures, avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers and the irrational use of a scarce resource like water.
Together with Enraiza Derechos and Fundação Encontro, NGOs that operate in the area in close contact with the Casa do Gaiato, we are part of one of the networks of the Work4Progress social impact project, run by Obra Social La Caixa. Collectively, we propose development programs in the region and move forward together, seeking the progress of communities and families. We regularly plant moringa trees, free of charge, on the land of small local producers to provide them with an additional source of income.
With the support of Spanish cooperation, we have planted 55,000 trees in the fields of neighbouring villages and the Casa do Gaiato facilities; furthermore, we have improved the ecological culture of local producers by installing composting plants and Bokashi fertilizer production, and expanded the moringa product manufacturing plant.
